RECENT INTERNATIONAL STUDIES OF PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIMINAL POLICY ARE SURVEYED AND EVALUATED BY THE CANADIAN GROUP FOR RESEARCH ON ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME (GRAC).
Abstract
THE SURVEY OF EXISTING LITERATURE UNDERTAKEN BY GRAC IS PART OF A LARGER RESEARCH PROJECT CONCERNING THE ATTITUDES OF THE CANADIAN PUBLIC TOWARDS CRIMINAL POLICY. BY ANALYZING A WIDE RANGE OF EXISTING METHODS AND RESULTS, THE PROJECT ATTEMPTS TO ISOLATE VARIABLES WHICH WOULD FORM PART OF A CANADIAN STUDY. EACH OF THE THREE PARTS OF THE STUDY FOCUS ON A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF CRIMINAL POLICY: (1) PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS CRIME INCLUDING POPULAR KNOWLEDGE OF THE LAW, PUBLIC ESTIMATION OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF OFFENSES, AND FEAR OF CRIME; (2) ATTITUDES OF THE POLICE AND THE POPULATION TOWARDS EACH OTHER; AND (3) PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS CRIME PREVENTION, THE COURT SYSTEM, AND THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM. IT IS HOPED THAT THE STUDY WILL INFLUENCE THE CRIMINAL POLICYMAKERS TO ADAPT THE PANEL PROCESS TO THE NEEDS AND OPINIONS OF THE POPULATION IT SERVES. THE VOLUME CONTAINS VARIOUS STATISTICAL CHARTS AND EXTREMELY DETAILED INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIES ON THE SUBJECT. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ 55963, 55964, AND 55965. --IN FRENCH. (SAJ)
