A summary of Canadian crime statistics for 1980 are presented. Numerous tables and graphs are included.
Abstract
Over 2 million Criminal Code offenses were reported by police through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, a 9.8 percent increase over 1979. This increase resulted from the rise in nonviolent property crimes, which composed about two-thirds of all Criminal Code offenses and increased 12.1 percent in Canada over the previous year. Nationally, violent crimes, numbering 155,352 or 7.6 percent of all Criminal Code offenses reported in 1980, increased 5.3 percent over 1979. Homicide decreased, while attempted murder, sexual offenses, and other crimes increased. Data on other Criminal Code offenses, provincial crime rates, and crime in police metro areas are also summarized.
