This guide presents strategies and tools for conducting campus threat assessments.
This guide from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services offers tools and strategies to assist campus security personnel in conducting campus threat assessments. The guide provides information for campus threat assessment teams to use in identifying the nature and process of violence, identifying persons at risk, reporting and assessing concerns identified through the assessment, and resolving situations using compassionate and effective approaches. The guide provides group exercises for use by assessment teams to allow them to improve their comprehension and application of the threat assessment principles outlined in a companion training manual. The guide contains eight case studies for teams to use to improve their assessment techniques. Each case study contains the initial report, a list of sources providing information on the perpetrator, key investigative questions that the team should discuss regarding the specific scenario, a set of questions for determining how the threat should be classified, and steps for developing a case management plan for handling the threat.
