EVALUATION OF THE PROGRAM IN WHICH PRISON INMATES WERE RELEASED 48 DAYS BEFORE PAROLE TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT, DRIVERS LICENSES AND CONTACT THEIR PAROLE OFFICERS.
Abstract
A DETAILED EXAMINATION IS MADE OF THE OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM AT THE SOUTHERN CONSERVATION CENTER. INFORMATION ABOUT FURLOUGH PLANS, STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS, AND FOLLOWUP DATA WERE OBTAINED BY INTERVIEW OF EACH FURLOUGHEE. QUESTIONS WERE ASKED CONCERNING HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS WELL AS HIS REACTIONS TO THE FURLOUGH. AN OVERALL EVALUATION OF EACH FURLOUGH WAS OBTAINED BY HAVING IT RATED BY THE INMATE'S CASEWORKER. AN INDEPENDENT RATER EVALUATED EACH FURLOUGH BY COMPARING THE PLANS DEVELOPED PRIOR TO GOING ON THE FURLOUGH WITH THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE ATTITUDES OF THE INMATE'S FAMILY TO THE FURLOUGH WERE OBTAINED THROUGH A MAIL-BACK QUESTIONNAIRE SENT ON THE DAY THE INMATE RETURNED. DATA WERE COLLECTED ON 198 FURLOUGHS.
