THIS PROGRESS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE ACTIVITIES AND RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN DURING 1972-1973 AS PART OF THIS PROGRAM WHICH TESTED THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNITY VERSUS INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT FOR JUVENILES.
Abstract
EARLIER PHASES OF THE COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAM (CTP) COMPARED THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUTHS WHO WERE PLACED DIRECTLY INTO THE INTENSIVE PAROLE AND COMMUNITY SUPERVISION OF CTP, WITHOUT ANY PRIOR INSTITUTIONALIZATION, AGAINST THAT OF A CONTROL GROUP YOUTHS WHO WERE SENT TO AN INSTITUTION FOR SEVERAL MONTHS PRIOR TO RETURNING TO THE COMMUNITY AND RECEIVING STANDARD PAROLE SUPERVISION. THE EXPERIMENTAL YOUTHS RECEIVED DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT ACCORDING TO THEIR CLASSIFICATION ON THE INTERPERSONAL MATURITY LEVEL SCALE. OBJECTIVES OF PHASE II OF THIS PROGRAM WERE TO BROADEN THE RANGE AND TYPE OF TREATMENT STRATEGIES THROUGH WHICH DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT MIGHT BE CARRIED OUT, TO BROADEN THE VARIETY OF OFFENDERS TO WHOM DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT MIGHT BE APPLIED, TO ISOLATE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUCCESS OF DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT APPROACHES, AND TO REFINE THE DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT MODEL. THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE RESEARCH FINDINGS AND ACTIVITIES WHICH BEAR UPON THE PHASE III OBJECTIVES. SUMMARIES AND REVIEWS OF SPECIFIC ANALYSES AND REPORTS CONDUCTED DURING 19721973 ARE ALSO PRESENTED. THESE ANALYSES COVER SUCH SUBJECTS AS THE PAROLE PERFORMANCE OF PHASE III YOUTHS; THE CHARACTERISTICS OF RELATIVELY SUCCESSFUL AND RELATIVELY UNSUCCESSFUL CTP MALES; THE MONITORING OF TREATMENT RELATIONSHIPS; AND A FURTHER ANALYSIS OF PHASE I AND PHASE II EXPERIMENTS.
