CHARACTERISTICS AND MOVEMENT STATISTICS FOR MEN AND WOMEN CIVILLY COMMITTED TO THE CALIFORNIA REHABILITATION CENTER PROGRAM FOR NARCOTIC ADDICTS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE STATISTICS CONCENTRATE ON THE 1974 AND 1975 TREATMENT GROUPS, ALTHOUGH COMPARISON FIGURES ARE INCLUDED FOR THE YEARS 1969-1973. TABLES INCLUDE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TREATMENT POPULATION, CHANGES IN INSTITUTION POPULATION, CIVIL NARCOTIC COMMITMENTS AND THE NUMBER OF CIVIL COMMITMENTS RELEASED, OUTPATIENT POPULATIONS, AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTERS. THE REPORT SHOWS THAT PERSONS IN THE PROGRAM AT THE CLOSE OF 1975 NUMBERED 2,138, A RATIO OF 10.1 PERSONS PER 100,000 STATE POPULATION. THIS IS THE HIGHEST RATIO SINCE 1970. OF THESE 1,863 WERE MEN, 275 WOMEN. MEDIAN AGE OF MALE RESIDENTS WAS 27.1 YEARS WITH 3.9 PERCENT UNDER AGE 21 WHILE THE MEDIAN AGE OF WOMEN WAS 26 YEARS WITH 5.7 PERCENT UNDER AGE 21. GRAPHS PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF TRENDS AND NARRATIVE SUMMARIES ACCOMPANY THE TABLES. A BREAKDOWN OF OFFENSE DATA SHOWS THAT 38.5 PERCENT OF MEN AND 49.4 PERCENT OF WOMEN COMMITTED HAD BEEN CONVICTED OF MARIHUANA OR CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE OFFENSES. ABOUT 80 PERCENT OF THOSE RELEASED WERE PLACED ON OUTPATIENT STATUS. INDEXES ARE PROVIDED FOR THE CHARTS AND TABLES. APPENDED ARE 5-YEAR SUMMARIES FOR VARIOUS PHASES OF THE PROGRAM AND A BREAKDOWN OF STATISTICS BY INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT CENTER. (GLR)
