VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR INMATES ARE EVALUATED BY DETERMINING WHETHER PAROLED WOMEN FIND EMPLOYMENT IN THE FIELDS IN WHICH THEY HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING.
Abstract
PAROLE OUTCOME WAS USED AS A SECONDARY MEASURE. SUBJECTS WERE 225 WOMEN RELEASED TO CALIFORNIA PAROLE DURING 1968 WHO HAD RECEIVED VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND A COMPARISON GROUP OF 154 RELEASED DURING THE SAME YEAR WHO HAD NOT RECEIVED TRAINING BUT WHOSE INSTITUTIONAL WORK ASSIGNMENTS HAD BEEN RELATED TO AREAS WHERE TRAINING WAS OFFERED. TRAINEES WERE DESCRIBED AS TO DEGREE OF ACHIEVEMENT IN VOCATIONAL COURSES, PRE-PRISON OCCUPATION, INITIAL PAROLE EMPLOYMENT, AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS AT 6 MONTHS AND 12 MONTHS AFTER RELEASE. THE PRECENTAGE OF RETURNS TO PRISON WITHIN 12 MONTHS FROM THE GROUP OF TRAINEES WAS COMPARED TO THE PERCENTAGE OF RETURNS FROM THE UNTRAINED GROUP.
