COMPARISON OF KNOWN CRIMINAL INVOLVEMENT WITHIN ONE YEAR OF PAROLE TERMINATION BY EARLY RELEASEES, STANDARD RELEASEES, AND RELEASEES ON EXPIRATION OF SENTENCE.
Abstract
EARLY RELEASEES WERE THOSE RELEASED FROM SUPERVISION AFTER ONE YEAR OF NO CRIMINAL INVOLVEMENT AND THE STANDARD GROUP WAS TERMINATED AFTER TWO YEARS OF NO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. TO ASSESS THE EFFECT OF THE ONE YEAR DISCHARGE, TWO COMPARISON GROUPS WERE SELECTED FROM OTHER DISCHARGES IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD. THE SELECTION PROCESS PRESCRIBED THAT THE PAROLEE'S FIRST YEAR ON PAROLE HAD BEEN WITHOUT INCIDENT. INFORMATION ON THE PAROLEES' BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS WAS OBTAINED FROM THE CUMULATIVE CASE SUMMARY FOR EACH FELON. IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN POST-DISCHARGE OUTCOME AMONG THE THREE TYPES OF DISCHARGES. IN COMPARING THE GROUPS ON BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS, NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND IN FOUR OF THE TEN CHARACTERISTICS. THE FINDINGS SHOW (AS THE BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS SUGGEST) THAT A GREATER PERCENTAGE OF THE EXPIRATION OF SENTENCE GROUP EXPERIENCED CRIMINAL INVOLVEMENT WITHIN ONE YEAR OF RELEASE THAN THE OTHER GROUPS. ON THE BASIS OF THIS EVIDENCE, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT IT IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE ARREST-FREE PERIOD THAT IS OF GREATER SIGNIFICANCE THAN THE BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS. THIS STUDY INCLUDES LISTS OF FIGURES, TABLES, AND AN HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PREVIOUS SIMILAR STUDIES.
