This document describes the statewide activities of the California Criminal Justice Department during the year 1996.
          Abstract
The report's first section presents criminal justice trend data for crimes, arrests, arrest dispositions, corrections populations, criminal justice personnel and expenditures for the most recent 10 years (1987-1996). The second section contains current year data for each county, including data for each contributing jurisdiction. The Appendix contains: (1) known data limitations and characteristics; (2) a glossary of criminal justice terms used in the publication; and (3) lists of the penal and other statutory codes that are included in each of the felony and misdemeanor arrest offense categories. Crime and arrest rates were calculated using annual population estimates provided by the Demographic Research Unit, California Department of Finance. Population estimates for the 1980s were revised based on the 1990 census. Appendix, tables, notes
