While the "small jail" typically refers to the county jail or the jail of a small city, the real "small jail" -- the calaboose or small town lockup -- has been virtually overlooked.
Abstract
In incorporated towns with fewer than 2,000 people, these small jails were an integral part of the local policing effort. This article reviews the origins of the calaboose, its construction, and the living conditions it afforded. Insights into the law enforcement in these small towns are also provided. Finally, current uses of the calaboose are described. 19 notes
