Advertisements can range from the deceptive tactics of the bait-and-switch carpet salesman to those that are helpful and informative, according to this film for consumers.
Abstract
Suggesting that advertisements are designed to make people buy, the film shows some of the ways in which these advertisements appeal to our unconscious needs. Examples are shown of advertisements that include appeals to snobbery and hero-worship through the sale of expensive cars or through the use of endorsements by football stars or cowboys. People are shown offering varied opinions on the worth of advertising and on the help or harm it causes people. The film ends by suggesting that consumers should ask themselves to what extent the purchases they make are influenced by advertising.
