This article describes the implementation process for a Business Police Academy (BPA).
Abstract
The authors explain that Business Police Academies (BPAs) are similar to Community Police Academies (CPA). CPAs are popular community outreach and education programs offered by local law enforcement agencies. Citizens attend the CPA to learn about local law enforcement efforts, crime trends in their area, and the tactics employed by police officers. The authors state that BPAs are similar except that they target businesses rather than any citizen. The goal of the BPA is to ensure communication between businesses and law enforcement, to provide information about local business-related crime trends, and to offer crime prevention information. A sample curriculum is provided in the article, with topics including criminal justice system operations, information about property and violent crimes, and loss prevention. The authors explain that the costs are minimal because students are charged for the course. Benefits of implementing local BPAs includes increased cooperation between law enforcement and business owners, which leads to greater crime reduction.
