This document is a fact sheet prepared by the Office of Juvenile Justice Prevention (OJJDP)concerning burglary cases referred to juvenile court.
Abstract
The fact sheet is a summary report prepared by the OJJDP detailing trends in offense rates and judicial handling of juvenile burglary offenders. The fact sheet covers juvenile burglary arrests between 1989 and 1998. According to the available data, arrests peaked between 1989 and 1992, but at the end of the study period in 1998, the arrest rate had declined 7 percent. Further, the data indicates gender differences during the study period. While male burglary offender arrest rates decreased 9 percent, female burglary offender arrest rates increased 17 percent to make female juvenile offenders responsible for 10 percent of total juvenile burglary arrestees. The total official handling of burglary cases increased for both genders, but referral of burglary offenders to out of home correctional placement decreased and females still remained less likely than their male counterparts to receive an out of home sanction.
