IN 1973-1974 TOTAL LAW SCHOOL ENROLLMENT ROSE 4.3 PERCENT WHILE ENROLLMENTS FOR MINORITIES ROSE 37.8 PERCENT AND FOR WOMEN 12.9 PERCENT. THE DEMAND FOR LEGAL EDUCATION IS SEEN CONTINUING.
Abstract
INCREASED LAW SCHOOL ADMISSIONS IN THE PERIOD 1970-1973 ARE DOCUMENTED, AS IS THE SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN ENTERING FRESHMEN GRADUATING. IN 1973 A TOTAL OF 22,342 JURIS DOCTORATES (J.D.)/BACHELOR OF LAWS (LL.B.) DEGREES WERE AWARDED; IN 1974 IT WAS 27,756. THE BIGGEST CHANGE HAS BEEN THE INCREASING NUMBERS OF MINORITY GRADUATES AND WOMEN GRADUATES. THE NUMBER OF WOMEN ENROLLED IN 1973 WAS 9 TIMES GREATER THAN IN 1963 AND IN 71 AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION APPROVED LAW SCHOOLS WOMEN CONSTITUTED 20 PERCENT OF THE FRESHMAN CLASS. IN 21 SCHOOLS THEY CONSTITUTED 30 PERCENT OR MORE AND AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY WOMEN OUTNUMBERED MEN 67 TO 63. FEMALE TEST SCORES ON THE ADMISSIONS EXAMINATION HAVE INCREASED. IN 1967 THE MEAN SCORE FOR WOMEN WAS 499, COMPARED TO 516 FOR MEN. IN 1972, THE MEAN SCORE FOR WOMEN WAS 531, COMPARED TO 520 FOR MEN. A TABLE PRESENTS LEGAL EDUCATION AND BAR ADMISSION STATISTICS. CONCERN IS EXPRESSED ABOUT FINDING JOBS FOR THESE GRADUATES. THE POOL OF TRAINED TALENT IS CALLED AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE. (GLR)
