This report describes the programs which are administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in the Office of Justice Programs.
Abstract
The Justice Assistance Block Grant Program awards funds to State agencies and units of local government for programs designed to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system. The responsibility for administration of the Justice Assistance Block Grant Program was placed in existing State agencies in most states. However, the lack of administrative funds, difficulty in obtaining the required matching funds, and uncertainty regarding the future of the program have slowed the implementation of the program. The Justice Assistance Discretionary Grant Program provides assistance to public agencies and private nonprofit organizations for the purposes of demonstration programs, educational and training programs for criminal justice personnel, and projects that are national or multi-state in scope. The State and Local Assistance for Narcotics Control Program assists State and local agencies in improving the apprehension, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and rehabilitation of drug offenders.
