This report examines how the national and local components of the National Funding Collaborative on Violence Prevention (NFCVP) are developing the capacity to implement strategies that focus on systemic issues of violence while responding to community needs to reduce crime.
Abstract
The introduction notes that crime reduction is not the same as violence prevention and that recent decreases in crime still leave much to be done in violence prevention; rates of violence and crime are still unacceptably high. National activities of the NFCVP have focused on building capacity at the national level, making decisions about the future and legacy of the national work, building a funding base to support the effort, building the infrastructure through board development, and sponsoring a national conference in late 1998 or early 1999 to increase visibility and expand resources. During 1997, local collaboratives focused on building their capacity to respond to emerging violence issues while continuing to implement their plans. Support and technical assistance are essential to their ongoing success. Two collaboratives experienced structure and governance problems that impeded their ability to raise funds and implement their strategies. The National Technical Assistance team continued to provide onsite support to the seven collaboratives that have requested their assistance. Evaluation data are also being collected.
