PROBATION OFFICERS' GOALS OF DEVELOPING A LOVING RELATIONSHIP OF CARE AND ASSISTANCE WITH THEIR CLIENTS IS SUPPORTED BY MORE DIVERSIFIED APPROACHES TO PROBATION.
Abstract
HOWEVER MUCH PROBATION COUNSELORS EXPLAIN THEIR WORK IN THE LANGUAGE OF TECHNOLOGY, ULTIMATELY THEY HAVE FOUND THAT THEY PLACE THEIR FAITH IN THE SPONTANEOUS POWER OF LOVE WITHIN A RELATIONSHIP. MOREOVER, EMERGING INTERACTIONIST CRIMINOLOGY FOCUSES ATTENTION OF DEVIANCE AS A PRODUCT OF AN INTERACTION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY, IN THE PROCESS OF WHICH THE PATHOLOGY OF THE INDIVIDUAL IS ONLY ONE AMONGST A NUMBER OF FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED. THUS PROBATION SERVICE NEEDS TO DEVELOP A RANGE OF STRATEGIES RELATED TO NEED AND OPPORTUNITY PROVISION AS WELL AS COUNSELING, PROJECTS THAT DO NOT CENTER ON REHABILITATION. ONE SUCH PROJECT DEVELOPED IS ONE THAT HAS TRIED TO BUILD ON TO ITS TRADITIONAL STRUCTURE A CONSTELLATION OF ADDITIONAL GROUP SUPPORTS AND ACTIVITIES APPROPRIATE TO THE NEEDS OF A DEPRIVED INNER CITY AREA. BY ESTABLISHING A PRINCIPLE OF SHARING CLIENTS IT WAS HOPED TO OFFER A DIFFERENTIAL RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES WHICH COULD BE CALLED UPON BY THE UNIT AS THE NEEDS OF THE CLIENTS VARIED. OTHER PROJECTS HAVE EVOLVED AROUND A SPECIALIST RESOURCE SPECIFICALLY INITIATED AND ENDORSED BY THE LOCAL SERVICE. STILL OTHER PROJECTS HAVE GROWN OUT OF INDIVIDUAL OFFICERS' COMMITMENT AND INTEREST. THE IMPLICATION IS THAT INTERVENTIONS SHOULD ALWAYS BE AIMED AT CAPITALIZING UPON WHATEVER CHOOSING CAPACITY MAY BE PRESENT. MANAGEMENT STRUCTURES MUST BECOME MORE AUTONOMOUS, AND MORE STAFF DEVELOPMENT MUST OCCUR FROM WITHIN THE SERVICE AS NEEDS ARISE. EIGHTEEN REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED.
