In September 1994, a new State jail sentencing system took effect in Texas; under this system, offenders who commit State jail felonies will be eligible to serve time in the State jail system rather than be sentenced to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Abstract
State jail felon legislation enacted in 1993 covers several offenses, including forgery; unauthorized vehicle use; burglary; drug possession; criminally negligent homicide; nonsupport; and injury to children, elderly individuals, or disabled individuals. The legislation stipulates that an offender is automatically probated upon conviction of a State jail felony and that an offender can also be punished with up to 2 years in a State jail facility. State jail felon estimates are provided for the seven largest counties in Texas. Data concern offender sentences, offenses, prior felony convictions, and the jail felon population in State jails. 55 charts
