This brief by the Canadian Criminal Justice Association supports the sponsorship of C-68, a law regarding the control of firearms and other weapons.
Abstract
With the exception of the provision for mandatory prison terms upon conviction, the Association supports passage of this bill. Some of the gun control-related issues discussed in this brief relate to a Canadian firearms registry, the seizure of firearms for public safety, a buy-back campaign similar to those conducted in the U.S., amnesty campaigns, establishment of a criminal record for failure to register a firearm, implementation of the legislation, and mandatory prison terms for any person who uses a firearm to commit, or attempt to commit, an indictable offense. While not a cure-all for solving the problem of violent crime, this legislation's efforts at prevention should reduce firearm-related crime and violence. 9 references
