Two studies tested the reliability and validity of a Dutch version of the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ), which provides continuous scores for identity commitment and exploration in the ideological (politics, religion, occupation, and value-orientation) and interpersonal (friendship, family, intimate relationships, and sex roles) areas.
Abstract
The combined studies demonstrated the factorial validity, reliability, and convergent validity of the Dutch translation of the EIPQ. Both the model with two process factors (commitment and exploration) and the model with four content factors (ideological commitment, ideological exploration, interpersonal commitment, and interpersonal exploration) had an adequate fit to the data when method variation (direction of wording) was controlled. The internal consistencies of commitment and exploration were moderate, in accordance with those reported in the literature. Moderate to high convergence between commitment and exploration and the global identity statuses was found. The Dutch version of the EIPQ is thus a promising instrument for the field of identity research. Study 1 involved a sample of 775 White freshmen from 2 colleges in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium; 565 of the students were enrolled at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, and 210 students were in the agri- and horticulture program. This study assessed the factor structure of the EIPQ as well as its internal consistencies. Study 2 involved a sample of 218 White female first-year students at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. The sample completed the Dutch version of the EIPQ, the revised Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status, and the revised Identity Style Inventory. 1 table and 22 references
