The number of screening breath tests in England and Wales in 1994 totaled 678,500, 13.2 percent greater than in 1993 and the largest annual number recorded to date.
Abstract
There were 93,300 positive or refused tests, 4.4 percent more than in 1993. At 14 percent, the percentage of all tests which were positive or refused was the lowest yet recorded. In December 1994, the number of screening tests was more than double that recorded in all other months; at 7 percent, however, the proportion of tests which were positive or refused was only half the average for the year. Police force areas with the highest number of positive or refused tests were Northumbria, Nottinghamshire, North Yorkshire, and West Midlands. Police force areas with the lowest rates were Cleveland, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, and the Metropolitan Police. 5 notes, 4 tables, and 2 figures
