This video examines issues in domestic violence pertinent to the nature of abusive relationships, victims leaving the abusive home with their children, developing independence through shelter programs, and obtaining protection through the legal system.
Abstract
The video presents descriptions of the nature of the abuse experienced by women who are talking about their abuse in a group therapy setting. Common themes in their abuse are extreme control by the abuser, violent reactions when the abuser senses he is losing control, and constructing isolation from outside influences on the partner and the family. The video also portrays the operation of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, established under Federal law to receive calls from both victims and abusers throughout the country who wish to receive help in dealing with the abuse. After examining the nature of abusive partner relationships, the video turns to issues involved in leaving the abusive relationship. The narrator notes the dangers of leaving a battering partner, since statistics show that victims are at 75 percent increased risk of serious harm or death when the abuser perceives he is losing control of the victim. A particular shelter for abused women and their children is described in the video. The shelter focuses on security for the residents, the provision of training for independent living, enrichment programs for children, and housing services. The video concludes with a profile of a court in Dorchester, MA, that is devoted entirely to the handling of domestic violence cases. It features prompt law enforcement response to ensure protection for victims and their children, the prosecution of cases even for victims who fail to cooperate, and the use of trained lawyers as advocates for victims.
