This paper is an ethnographic study of street kids, an effort to understand their culture and their view of the world.
Abstract
Street kids are young people between the ages of 13 and 22 who have chosen to leave home and live with friends or acquaintances or on the streets, away from family, foster home or other alternatives. This study examines the lives of such street kids in Spokane, WA, in an effort to understand their culture and the reasons behind their rebellion against traditional forms of shelter and care. Once such information is known, alternative ways can be developed for interacting with and providing for street kids. The dissertation includes sections on developing rapport with street kids, where street kids spend their time, why young people leave home, survival on the streets, and practical implications.
