This report presents crime statistics and other criminal justice statistics for Bulgaria for the years 1910 through 1990.
Abstract
Official crime statistics for Bulgaria have for decades been "for office use" only. No rational reason has been given for this refusal to make crime statistics and other criminal justice statistics public, particularly since Bulgaria's crime rates have been lower than those of most countries. The publication of Bulgaria's crime statistics coincides with a crime increase that has accompanied changes in the socioeconomic system. Researchers' unrestricted access to crime statistics should help in planning strategies for crime prevention and control. (Author abstract modified)
