THIS STUDY PROVIDES A BEHIND-THE-ARMOR LIVE/DIE PREDICTIVE CAPABILITY FOR ANIMALS BASED ON PHYSICAL PARAMETERS AND POST-EXPERIMENTAL PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASURES.
Abstract
THESE PARAMETERS INCLUDE PROJECTILE MASS, DIAMETER, AND IMPACT VELOCITY; TISSUE THICKNESS OVER THE IMPACTED VITAL ORGAN; BODY MASS AND A RATIO OF LUNG MASS TO BODY MASS; AND MEASUREMENTS OF ARTERIAL AND VENOUS OXYGEN PRESSURE. DATA GENERATED BY THE STUDY REVEAL THAT SERIOUS INJURY AND DEATH CAN OCCUR FROM NONPENETRATING PROJECTILE IMPACTS INFLICTED ON ANIMALS WEARING LIGHTWEIGHT SOFT BODY ARMOR.
