Practical information on effective citizen initiated programs to rid their neighborhoods of drugs is presented.
Abstract
This is a guide prepared by the Select Committee on Narcotics to provide practical information on how to safely deter drug dealing and discourage drug abuse. It contains examples of successful programs and techniques that have been devised by various community groups who are attempting to rid their neighborhoods of drugs. Some of the programs described are the Metro Orange Coalition, a neighborhood watch program in Washington, D.C.; Self Help for African People Through Education (SHAPE) from Houston, Texas; the Newark (New Jersey) Fighting Back Initiative; and the Regional Youth/Adult Substance Abuse Project (RYASAP) from Bridgeport, Connecticut. Several pages of resources for additional information on community antidrug and anticrime programs is provided including addressed and phone numbers for antidrug groups, publications and other private and government offices involved in the war on drugs and crime.
