Abstract
THE FIVE PAPERS PRESENTED ARE BUT A SMALL REPRESENTATION OF THE MANY OTHER PAPERS PRESENTED DURING THE CONFERENCE. THE PAPERS INCLUDED DEAL WITH BROAD AND SPECIFIC CONCERNS OF BLACKS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. ONE PAPER HIGHLIGHTS THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE 'SYSTEM' TO BLACKS. ANOTHER FOCUSES ON LEGAL AND LEGISLATIVE ISSUES AND THEIR IMPACT ON BLACKS. A THIRD PAPER REVIEWS AND EVALUATES RESEARCH CONDUCTED ON BLACKS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND PROVIDES DIRECTION FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. A CRITICAL LOOK AT THE BLACK COMMUNITY, THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THE POLICE TO THIS POPULATION, AND A MODEL FOR COMMUNITY CONTROL OF THE POLICE IS PRESENTED IN A FOURTH PAPER. THE FINAL ESSAY DISCUSSES RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION PROBLEMS OF BLACK EMPLOYEES AND SOME OF THE INTERNAL CONFLICTS BLACK CORRECTIONAL WORKERS EXPERIENCE. A TENTATIVE CONSTITUTION AND GOALS FOR THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACKS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ARE INCLUDED. THE OBJECTIVES INVOLVE MINORITY REPRESENTATION AND PARTICIPATION IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY MAKING, THE RECRUITMENT OF BLACKS AND MINORITIES INTO ALL AREAS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND TO SERVE AS A VEHICLE FOR INPUT INTO LEGISLATION AND SOCIAL POLICY FORMULATION.
