The emergence of the private security sector in France has opened up employment opportunities for black Africans.

Abstract

Although often victims of xenophobia and job discrimination and designated as potential trouble-makers, these black African immigrants are highly sought after by private firms as security personnel or bodyguards. The contribution of black Africans to the private security sector is new. The requirements of client firms for these immigrants, however, illustrate a basic phenotypic effect and reveal the complexity of the phenomenon of racism in French society. 47 references
