The role of biology in criminology and criminal justice education is discussed and supported.
Abstract
This article provides support for increasing the role of biology in criminal justice education. Some of the books that have discussed why biology has not been included among the behavioral sciences are reviewed. The historical role of biology in the development of criminal justice education and criminology is discussed. A discussion of the development of biological criminology focuses on its main elements, human genetics, neurology and brain functioning, and learning theory. Suggestions are made for ways to integrate biology into a criminal justice program including a recommended list of relevant films. Finally, the author argues for the incorporation of new scientific knowledge into the criminal justice process to prevent crime before it occurs or to treat the offenders in the early stages.
