Abstract
According to this publication, more than 35,000 people in England, Scotland, and Wales were affected by bike theft in the year 2000. The term “bike” refers to mopeds, scooters, and motorbikes. The Bike Theft Index is presented, which shows the makes and groups of bikes that are most at risk of theft in England, Scotland, and Wales. According to this information, mopeds and scooter thefts are on the rise because of their growing popularity as commuter bikes and because they are easily wheeled away or bundled into vans. This publication also discusses security measures that can be taken by owners of bikes, including electronic and mechanical security measures. The publication also suggests the use of secured car parks where bikes can be locked into place. Similarly, putting obvious security markings on bikes makes their theft less attractive to potential thieves. The Bike Theft Index for England, Scotland, and Wales is based on information obtained from the Police National Computer and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). The Bike Theft Index splits each make of bike into a group based on engine capacity or style, as registered with the DVLA. It notes the risk of each make of bike through the use of a color-coded system, with red indicating those makes most at risk and green indicating those makes least at risk of theft. Resources and contact information for advice on further security measures is offered.
