This article reviews the communications and public safety features of the Bickford Linx vehicle.
Abstract
Bickford Broadcast Vehicles, based in Chantilly, VA, offers a multi-media emergency communication vehicle that comes equipped with a JPS Communications ACU-1000 Modular Interconnect System, a two-way satellite link, an extendable microwave radio mast, and the ability to support multiple radios, cellphone, and landline telephone connections. The cost for the Bickford Linx ranges from $300,000 to $500,000, a more affordable model than its closest competitor, the InfraLynx, which has an $800,000 price tag. Bickford Broadcast Vehicles began making public safety vehicles when the Red Cross approached them about designing an emergency communications vehicle with a Ford Excursion. Many other companies shied away from the contract because of the difficulty of fitting equipment into an SUV. Bickford explains that they had been building Linx-type vehicles for television stations for years, so they knew they could design a public safety vehicle with a Ford Excursion. The author notes that since the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, the need for emergency communications vehicles has become evident. The author suggests that police agencies shop around for the best value and also try to get a Ford Excursion or similar vehicle donated. Bickford will bring their price down by around $30,000 if the police agency supplies its own vehicle.
