THIS 386-PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY TRACES THE CHANGE IN FOCUS FOUND IN LITERATURE ON PROSTITUTION FROM THE RELIGIOUS CONDEMNATION OF THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE FEMINIST WORKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
Abstract
IN THE PREFACE TO THIS COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF BOOKS, ARTICLES, TEXTS OF LAWS, AND MISCELLANEOUS DOCUMENTS BY BOTH EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN WRITERS, THE CHANGING VIEW OF PROSTITUTION IS TRACED. BEFORE THE 16TH CENTURY PROSTITUTION WAS CONSIDERED EVIL BUT NECESSARY. AFTER THE SYPHILIS EPIDEMIC WHICH SWEPT EUROPE AND THE AMERICAS IN THE 1600'S, THE MEDICAL FOCUS PREDOMINATED. THE WRITERS IN THE 1800'S CONSIDERED PROSTITUTION A PATHOLOGY, WHILE THE LATE 1900'S HAVE SEEN A CHANGE IN EMPHASIS FROM THE PROSTITUTE TO HER CUSTOMER. THE MATERIAL IS NOT LIMITED BY PUBLICATION DATE. SOME FOREIGN LANGUAGE DOCUMENTS ARE INCLUDED, AND SOME OF THE ENTRIES ARE ANNOTATED. THE CITATIONS ARE DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: GENERAL WRITINGS; ANTHROPOLOGY; AREA STUDIES; BIOGRAPHY AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY; BUSINESS (INCLUDING THE CRIMINAL ASPECTS); FICTION (PRIMARILY IN ENGLISH); GUIDES AND DESCRIPTIVE HISTORY; JUVENILES; LEGAL AND POLICE REGULATIONS; LITERATURE; MALES; MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH; ORGANIZATIONS, SOCIETIES, AND PUBLICATIONS; PSYCHIATRY; PSYCHOLOGY; RELIGION AND MORALITY; SOCIOLOGY; AND WAR. WITHIN EACH CATEGORY, ENTRIES ARE ARRANGED BY AUTHOR (WHERE AVAILABLE). THERE IS ALSO AN INDEX OF AUTHORS.
