THIS PAPER EXAMINES A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS THAT HAVE USED BEHAVIORAL TECHNIQUES WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENTS, AND EVALUATES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUCH PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE PROGRAMS DISCUSSED INCLUDE IMMEDIATE REINFORCEMENT OR PUNISHMENT, SCHEDULED REINFORCEMENT, SECONDARY OR MEDIARY REINFORCEMENT, TOKEN ECONOMIES, AND BEHAVIORAL CONTRACTS. PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS ARE TRACED BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RATIONALE FOR BEHAVIORAL TECHNIQUES. SOME PSYCHOSOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS ARE CONSIDERED THAT MAY ALLOW FOR THE MORE PRODUCTIVE APPLICATION OF THE APPROACH. THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY EMERGES AS AN IMPORTANT CONSEQUENCE OF APPROPRIATE USE OF BEHAVIORAL PRINCIPLES.
