DESCRIPTION OF A SOCIAL-LEARNING APPROACH TO CORRECTIONS COUNSELING WHICH USES BEHAVIOR SCRIPTS AND REHEARSALS TO INFLUENCE PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND MEASURES ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETED WHILE ON HOME FURLOUGH.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM DESCRIBED IS CONDUCTED AT VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL FOR BOYS, ILL. DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS. STUDENTS LEARN TO RECOGNIZE NEEDED BEHAVIORAL CHANGES BY ANALYZING BEHAVIORAL SCRIPTS, THEN PRACTICE APPROPRIATE SOCIAL RESPONSES IN THE INSTITUTIONAL SETTING THROUGH USE OF BEHAVIORAL REHEARSALS. THEY MAKE WRITTEN CONTRACTS TO PERFORM SPECIFIC BEHAVIOR 'ASSIGNMENTS' WHILE IN THE THERAPEUTIC CONTEXT OF THE HOME FURLOUGH. PARENTS MONITOR THE ASSIGNMENTS AND, BY REPORTING BACK TO THEIR CHILD'S COUNSELOR, ALLOW COUNSELORS TO ASSESS TREATMENT PROGRESS AND GIVE THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION A MEANS BY WHICH TO MONITOR COUNSELORS' EFFECTIVENESS.
