IMPROVING THE BEHAVIOR OF DELINQUENT JUVENILE MALES BY MAKING PAROLE CONTINGENT ON SATISFACTORY EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM WAS RUN BY THE NEVADA YOUTH TRAINING CENTER IN ELKO, NEVADA. THE BOYS BECAME ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE WHEN THEY EARNED A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF POINTS BY TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, DEVELOPING SELF-CONTROL, AND COMPLETING EDUCATIONAL GOALS. UNDESIRABLE BEHAVIOR WAS PENALIZED BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOR POINTS REQUIRED FOR PAROLE RECOMMENDATION. AN EVALUATIVE STUDY SHOWED AN INCREASE OF OVER 100 PER CENT IN THE NUMBER OF BOYS RELEASED FROM THE INSTITUTION WHO WERE NOT RETURNED TO STATE CARE DURING THE EVALUATION PERIOD COMPARED TO THOSE IN THE YEAR BEFORE THE PROGRAM.
