Abstract
Successful leaders help those around them succeed and see forward progress and complete projects. They empower others and get them committed to the goals and mission of the organization. Effective leaders help develop their employees, encouraging and enabling them to grow both professionally and personally. The success of these leaders comes from their personal qualities and support of others' endeavors toward the accomplishments of the organization's mission and goals. At the core of law enforcement organizations' success is the ability to motivate employees to act. The most successful law enforcement leader is one who uses their personal qualities to motivate their staff. This article discusses how an effective leader's use of positional authority and personal qualities achieve these results. 10 endnotes
