Abstract
THE BOOK CLOSELY EXAMINES THE CANADIAN 'OCTOBER CRISIS' WHICH BEGAN IN MONTREAL IN 1970 WITH THE ABDUCTION OF THE BRITISH TRADE COMMISSIONER. DURING THE NEXT THREE MONTHS QUEBEC'S MINISTER OF LABOR AND IMMIGRATION WAS KIDNAPPED AND MURDERED, 10,000 TROOPS WERE DEPLOYED IN THE STREETS, AND THE WAR MEASURES ACT WAS EVOKED MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO DETAIN INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT CHARGE OR BAIL. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE MILITARY AS AN AID TO CIVILIAN POWER, COMPARES SOLDIERS AND POLICEMEN, AND CONSIDERS THE COMPATABILITY OF THE TWO JOBS. THE CONCLUSIONS DERIVED FROM THIS EXAMINATION SHOULD BE APPLICABLE TO ANY HIGHLY DEVELOPED, INDUSTRIALIZED DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY.
