This report contains data on 1992 and 1993 admissions to and discharges from Bay Area Services Network (BASN) substance abuse programs.
Abstract
The BASN, funded by the California Department of Corrections (CDC), provides community-based substance abuse treatment services for CDC adult parolees who parole into the six BASN counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara). In terms of personnel characteristics, BASN admissions resembled those of the total parole caseload, except that females accounted for slightly over 13 percent of admissions, compared to 10 percent of total parolees. During the 2 years under review, the average age of admissions was approximately 33 years; over 70 percent were ethnic minorities; cocaine was the most frequent drug reported by participants at admission; and about half of the admissions indicated no prior treatment experience. At approximately 2 years post-parole, nine participants (60 percent) had been discharged from parole, four were currently on parole, and two had returned to prison with new terms.
