THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS INFORMATION ON THE OCCURRENCE OF WIFE BEATING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, THE PROBLEMS FACED BY WOMEN WHO WISH TO ESCAPE FROM SUCH A SITUATION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE SERVICES FOR THEM.
Abstract
COMPOSITE OFFENDER AND VICTIM CHARACTERISTICS ARE DRAWN UP FROM VARIOUS SURVEYS. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT THIRTY LIVES COULD BE SAVED EACH YEAR THROUGH EARLY RECOGNITION OF THE PROBLEM. THE BARRIERS THAT MUST BE OVERCOME BY WOMEN WHO WISH TO BETTER THEIR PLIGHT ARE FORMIDABLE. THE LAW HOLDS THAT A MAN'S HOME IS HIS CASTLE AND THE POLICE ARE HESITANT TO INTERVENE. EMERGENCY HOUSING IS SCARCE AND THE FUNDS NECESSARY TO SUPPORT CHILDREN IN THE ABSENCE OF THE HUSBAND ARE OFTEN SCARCER.
