Annotation

This article describes the development of an adult basic literacy program by one region of the Correctional Service of Canada.

Abstract

The adult basic education program was developed by the University of Saskatchewan for the Prairie Regional Office of the Correctional Service of Canada, which includes the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Because of differences among the provinces' standards for adult basic education, it was necessary that prison educators be involved in the development of the curriculum and this, in turn, provided excellent staff development experiences for the teachers. The curriculum includes reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as natural and human sciences. Support materials are also provided. The article criticizes attempts to link the attainment of literacy with the reduction if recidivism, but points out that the linking of an on-going literacy program with staff development produces helpful results. 9 references.
