This document presents the curriculum guidelines, developed by California law enforcement trainers and criminal justice educators in cooperation with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, for use in training police officers in safe driving techniques in emergency and nonemergency situations.
Abstract
Individual sections present information regarding the components of defensive driving, high-risk driving maneuvers, and the advantages of using seat belts. Additional sections focus on factors that affect stopping distance, the effect of speed on a turning vehicle, the relationship between speed and distance traveled, emergency driving policies, and the limitations of emergency warning devices. Other guidelines cover nonemergency operating conditions, factors affecting liability, police escorts, vehicle inspection, understeering and oversteering, braking skids, vehicle control techniques, collision avoidance, threshold braking, and pursuit at controlled speeds.
