This booklet outlines the program of California's Basic Correctional Officer Academy held at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center and specifies expectations for cadets while they are attending the academy.
Abstract
The booklet indicates that the overall objective of the correctional officer cadet training program is to produce competent, qualified correctional officers who will enforce the laws of the State and provide service to the public by confining and supervising convicted felons. In addition to a statement of the goal of the cadet training program, the booklet also outlines the mission of the California Department of Corrections, along with its purpose and objectives, and the mission of the Correctional Training Center, which is to provide training for all correctional personnel. Procedural guidelines are encompassed under the topics of orientation day, uniform rentals, academy rules, behavioral expectations, discipline, and daily activities. Included in the explanation of daily activities is an outline of the four areas of the training program: academic instruction, tactical skills (firearms and chemical agents), physical training, and self-defense (PR-24 baton and weaponless defense). The training received in each of these areas is described in detail in separate sections of this booklet. The section on academic instruction indicates the minimum academic standards and lists curriculum topics and the hours spent on each one. The booklet also explains procedures that may be pursued by a cadet who fails to meet the minimum academic standards outlined in the booklet. Other topics discussed in the booklet are equal opportunity employment, the uniform requirement, grooming standards, living arrangements, duty assignments, "liberty," pay days, telephones, mail, transportation, travel reimbursement, parking, the use of a State vehicle, laundry and dry cleaning, illness and injury, meal service, barber service, on-the-job training, final evaluation, and graduation.
