BECAUSE NOT ENOUGH CANDIDATES FOR THE POLICE FORCE OF FRANKFURT AM MAIN, WEST GERMANY, WERE APPLYING, THE AGE LIMIT FOR RECRUITS WAS RAISED ON OCTOBER 1, 1971, AND A SATISFACTORY NUMBER OF OLDER CANDIDATES THEN APPLIED.
Abstract
THE AGES OF THESE OLDER RECRUITS WHO SUBSEQUENTLY WERE ENROLLED IN TRAINING COURSES VARIED FROM 24 TO 35. STEADY EMPLOYMENT, VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES, THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND REASONABLE PROSPECTS FOR ADVANCEMENT WERE GIVEN AS REASONS FOR VOLUNTEERING. THE TRAINING GIVEN THESE OLDER RECRUITS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. RESENTMENT AMONG YOUNGER POLICE TRAINEES WAS REPORTED ON THE GROUNDS THAT THE OLDER RECRUITS, IT WAS THOUGHT, WOULD GET PROMOTED MORE QUICKLY. THIS RESENTMENT WAS EXPECTED TO DISAPPEAR AS SOON AS IT BECAME APPARENT THAT ALL CANDIDATES FOR PROMOTION WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE SAME TESTS AND NO PREFERENCE WOULD BE SHOWN FOR ANY AGE GROUP. --IN GERMAN
