This report presents statistics on bank crimes at federally insured financial institutions during 1998.
Abstract
Violations of the Federal Bank Robbery and Incidental Crimes Statute included 7,991 robberies, burglaries and larcenies at commercial banks, mutual savings banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions, and armored carrier companies. The report includes statistics under the following categories: Number, Race and Sex of Perpetrators; Occurrences by Day and Time; Institution/Community Characteristics; Security Devices Maintained by Victim Institutions; Security Devices Used During Crimes; Security Devices Functioned; Modus Operandi; and Injuries, Deaths and Hostages Taken. The report includes statistics in those same categories for bank extortion violations. The report also includes statistics on violations by regions, geographic divisions, states and territories. Finally, it presents statistics on violations involving armored carriers investigated under the Hobbs Act.
