THIS LAW ENFORCEMENT EQUIPMENT STANDARD, APPROVED AND ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, CONSISTS OF PERFORMANCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS A DESCRIPTION OF TESTING METHODS.
Abstract
POLICE BODY ARMOR WHICH CAN MEET THE REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN THE DOCUMENT IS CONSIDERED TO BE OF SUPERIOR QUALITY AND SUITED TO THE NEEDS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. PURCHASERS CAN USE THE TEST METHODS DESCRIBED IN THIS STANDARD TO DETERMINE FIRSTHAND WHETHER A PARTICULAR EQUIPMENT ITEM MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD, OR THEY MAY HAVE THE TEST CONDUCTED ON THEIR BEHALF BY A QUALIFIED TESTING LABORATORY. THE DOCUMENT IS OF A TECHNICAL NATURE, AND ITS SPECIAL FOCUS IS AS A PROCUREMENT AID. THUS, IT IS OF LIMITED USE TO THOSE WHO SEEK GENERAL GUIDANCE CONCERNING BODY ARMOR. THE CLASSIFICATION OF BODY ARMOR ACCORDING TO THE DEGREE OF PROTECTION OFFERED IS EXPLAINED, AND TECHNICAL TERMS USED IN THE DOCUMENT ARE DEFINED. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR TEST SAMPLES, WORKMANSHIP, LABELING, ETC., ARE OUTLINED, AND SPECIFIC TEST METHODS AND PROCEDURES FOR THE VARIOUS CLASSIFICATIONS OF BODY ARMOR ARE PRESENTED. DIAGRAMS AND TABLES ARE PROVIDED TO ILLUSTRATE AND SUMMARIZE THE MATERIAL PRESENTED.
