STANDARDS ISSUED BY THE NILECJ LAW ENFORCEMENT LABORATORY INDICATING THE TYPE OF TESTING WHICH SHOULD BE DONE WHEN EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CURRENT TORSO ARMOR.
Abstract
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES ARE PRESENTED FOR THE TESTING AND EVALUATION OF THREE TYPES OF BODY ARMOR, THEIR STRENGTHS RANGING FROM THE ABILITY TO STOP .22 CALIBER BULLETS TO .30-06 ARMOR PIERCING PROJECTILES. THE SUGGESTED PROCEDURE EMPLOYS A CHRONOGRAPH TO DETERMINE MINIMUM BULLET VELOCITY AND A DEFORMATION BLOCK TO TEST INTERIOR DEFORMATION ON IMPACT. MINIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE SELECTION OF TORSO ARMOR ARE OUTLINED ALONG WITH SAMPLING TECHNIQUES TO BE USED IN TESTING LARGE LOTS OF EQUIPMENT.
