Prepared for the Legislative Council's Special Committee on Women Offenders, this brief presents background information on Wisconsin's prison and community corrections systems for adults.
Abstract
The report discusses the organization of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, outlines a brief history of the adult corrections system, and then reviews the procedures and programs of the prison and probation and parole systems. At present, there are 10 correctional institutions and 15 correctional centers in operation for men and 1 correctional institution and 3 correctional centers for females. The review of the prison system considers administration, the sentencing process, inmate assessment and evaluation, and parole determination. Procedures of the probation and parole system include case classification, client management classification, supervision of probationers and parolees, revocation of probation and parole, and the use of county jails. 9 appendixes
