Data was collected from a sample of 3000 Norwegian adolescents to test their awareness of a national AIDS education campaign which promoted condom use and consisted of a poster, TV discussion program, TV advertisement, pop song, and music cassette. Data were collected through an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire.
Abstract
The awareness of the various campaign components ranged from 50 percent to 9 percent; 48 percent of respondents reported awareness of at least one element. A path model was constructed to explain the social processes which led to campaign awareness. Sexual experience, educational aspirations, and gender seemed to influence awareness of the campaign through three different paths. The study results suggest that increasing adolescents' ability to communicate about sexual topics remains a priority for HIV prevention programs. 2 tables, 2 figures, and 15 references (Author abstract modified)
