FEMALE CRIMINALS WHO OPERATED IN THE JEWISH UNDERWORLD IN NEW YORK CITY'S LOWER EAST SIDE DURING PART OF THE PROGRESSIVE ERA IN THE EARLY 1900'S ARE DISCUSSED; MOST OF THE FEMALE CRIMINALITY CENTERS AROUND PROSTITUTION
Abstract
BASED ON STATISTICS COMPILED BY THE BUREAU OF SOCIAL MORALS IN NEW YORK CITY BEGINNING IN 1912, 311 FEMALE CRIMINALS OF THE PROGRESSIVE ERA WERE IDENTIFIED AND CATEGORIZED AS PROSTITUTES (149); ENTREPRENEURS (78); THIEVES (56); WHORE-THIEVES (4); AND NARCOTICS DEALERS (24). FACTORS ANALYZED INCLUDE WHETHER OR NOT THE WOMEN WERE MARRIED, WERE A PART OF ORGANIZED CRIME, ENGAGED IN COLLATERAL CRIMINAL OCCUPATIONS, AND WORKED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MEN. FURTHER RESEARCH IS CALLED FOR IN THE AREA OF FEMALE ROLES AND THEIR CHANGES OVER TIME AS INTERMEDIARIES BETWEEN THE UNDERWORLD AND UPPERWORLD OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS. SUPPORTING STATISTICS AND NOTES ARE PROVIDED. (DAS)
