An attempt was made to estimate the number of undetected auto thieves in the Australian Capital Territory in 1987.
Abstract
Estimation techniques normally used in wildlife studies provided useful insights into the total criminal picture. An estimated 39 percent of offenders were charged with at least one count of auto theft. Juveniles' involvement in court proceedings was disproportionately high compared to their auto theft participation rate. Fifty-nine adults accounted for 132 auto thefts in 1987, and 72 juveniles accounted for 239 thefts. Ninety-five percent of the sample were males. Most of the offenders were charged with only one offense, but one 17-year-old juvenile was charged 31 times, and a 19-year-old adult was charged 27 times. 5 tables and 15 references (Author abstract modified)
